Writer Beware – Contests by Tymber Dalton

Well, making the rounds are advertisements for a new e-book “contest.” They claim to be the “only awards program in the world” for digital publishing.

Let’s start off by blowing that claim out of the water. The EPIC contest (for electronic publishing) has been around for a dozen years or so. And off the top of my head I don’t remember if they are the oldest, but they are certainly one of the oldest ones around. (And yes, while EPIC members have sent them notices that they are NOT the only one around, they have yet to change their website to reflect the correction. To me, that’s blatant misrepresentation.)

Secondly, this “contest” claims to be “unaffiliated,” yet it’s being run by a book promotions and marketing company.

Hmm. Conflict of interest much?

That’s not to mention the outrageous entry fee for said contest.

Before you start willy-nilly entering contests, do your research. Find out about said “contest” because like the old poetry and short story “contests” of old, chances are it’s just a front for a money-making scheme. I remember in high school entering a poetry “contest” and *gasp* lucky me, I was able to purchase a copy of the anthology my poem was published in even though I didn’t win the grand prize! So they made money off me with the entry fee and with buying a copy of the book.

I mean, yeah, I know better now, of course.

This is why it’s vitally important for writers to join professional groups. RWA, EPIC, or even non-official groups like the Internet Writing Workshop or Absolute Write forum where you can network with other writers and find out more information before plunking down money you might or might not be able to afford. Surf the Preditors & Editors site. Now, I don’t go so far as saying don’t enter a contest with an entry fee. I’m saying do your research first. Make sure the contest is affiliated with a reputable organization.

And make sure it’s more than a money-making scheme.

Happy December! by Tymber Dalton

If you’re in the US, did you survive your turkey coma? LOL! I, for one, did NOT go out shopping on Black Friday, although I did have to run errands. December brings about the end of hurricane season (yay!) and the start of the oh-my-god-there-goes-my-electric-bill season as my husband goes batshit decorating the outside of our house in a manner that would make Clark Griswald jealous.

No, I’m not kidding.

I did find out that THREE of my books have finaled in the annual EPIC book contest: Cross Country Chaos, Out of the Darkness, and The Reluctant Dom. Woot! Now to decide if I’m going to go to the conference in March in New Orleans (I have a dreadful fear of flying) to attend the banquet where the winners will be announced.

I also flunked out of Nano before I even got started. I was too busy writing to write. I was invited to participate in a special project, had to do edits on “Safe Harbor” (writing as Tymber Dalton, coming 12/7 from Siren-BookStrand!), and trying to finish up several other wips I need to get done and submitted to my publishers.

I’m also in the middle of home improvement hell. Nothing so drastic as ripping out a kitchen, but we’re almost finally done with our new floors, I still have to do trimwork around some of the edges. And now I have to finish painting the greatroom (we don’t have separate living/dining rooms)…before hubby puts up our THREE Christmas trees.

Oh, yes. Three. The big one, a smaller six-foot one, and a tabletop one. Yes, it gets crowded here in Hell’s Happy Acres once hubby starts his holiday hall-decking.

So how are you planning on spending the holidays? Any special family traditions you have?

Here in Florida, we do actually have seasons. Not drastically different ones, which is why so many people move down here from the north every winter. The past two days, we’ve had a “cool front,” which this time of year means the humidity has dropped from the 90% range down to 60-70%. The temps are a little lower, but that’s relative.

It. Feels. GREAT!

I am an A/C kind of girl — as in, my A/C runs 24/7/365. But the past two days I’ve been able to turn it off and open my windows.

This only happens a few days a year for me, seriously. Because there has to be a perfect combination of low humidity, great temperature, and no wind blowing through my windows for me to do this.

I hope the guys painting the house under construction across the street enjoy Red Hot Chili Peppers, because I was blasting the Californication album at high decibles today. *LOL*

Coming March 2009!

Halloween is this month, or Samhain depending on your preference. So I thought I’d toss out one of my books to commemorate the occasion – “Out of the Darkness,” a romantic paranormal thriller set in Florida. An evil haunted, house, a dark spirit, and a Labrador Retriever. What more could you want? *LOL*

You can get it from Lyrical Press at:

The video book trailer is here:

Ancient evil forces a woman to fight for her life – and true love.

Man may forget horrors, but the land remembers. Built on a cursed patch of ground, George Simpson’s house of evil has ruined many lives over its hundred-year existence.

Author Steve Corey rents the place as an early anniversary surprise for his wife, hoping it might repair the deep rift his alcoholism has created in their marriage.

Before they moved to the Simpson house, Samantha Corey thought getting Steve sober was the hard part. But the house’s dark nature has turned her thoughts to Matt Barry, Steve’s best friend and agent…and her old love. Can they overcome the ancient evil threatening them all from OUT OF THE DARKNESS?

Warning: Love, sex, violence, and a Labrador retriever who’s no Lassie.

td-tdn1Woot! I love release day! My newest Tymber Dalton book, “Three Dog Night,” the third in the Triple Trouble shape-shifter series, released yesterday at Siren-BookStrand and after less than twenty-four hours is already at number 5 on their 14-day bestseller list. Woot!

[Menage Amour 98: Erotic Paranormal Menage a Quatre Romance, F/M/M/M, Shape-Shifters]

For Elain Pardie, every night is a three dog night. With Ain, Brodey, and Cail Lyall as her mates, Elain’s biggest worry is getting through her wedding. She doesn’t want to let the cat out of the bag to her mom that she’s living with three Alpha wolf shape-shifters.

Between learning about her new way of life, a creepy, mysterious stranger in town, and a hot-to-trot feline shifter with her sights set on Brodey, Elain’s got her hands full. Not to mention her strange need for a hunt is back with a vengeance. Can life get any crazier?

Ain, Brodey, and Cail suspect it can: someone’s killing shifter mates. As a cousin and his new mate move in, Ain’s worries mount. And while trying to untangle secrets of Elain’s distant past, Ain discovers a connection to an old family that could threaten not just their happiness…but their very lives.

Not quite dead…yet… by Tymber Dalton

I’m not dead, I swear. Yes, I’ve been swamped, between family and professional priorities and obligations, and unfortunately my blogging ended up shoved to the back of the Fibber McGee closet that is my life.

Tomorrow, I’m happy to announce, Hell’s Bells, book 2 in my Good Will Ghost Hunting series, is being released by Lyrical Press. Woot! I’m tickled to death, needless to say!

This comes on the heels of awesome sales of the first book, Demon Seed, as well as great sales for my two Tymber Dalton Lyrical Press books, The Reluctant Dom and Domme by Default.

I’m also starting a writing how-to series of tips on my main blog, Tales from the Snark Side, starting tomorrow. Feel free to pop by and give it a peek if you have time.

I’ve got a bunch of irons in the fire right now, including the third Good Will Ghost Hunting book, the third in the Triple Trouble shapeshifter series, the prequel to Love Slave for Two AND book 3 in that series, the “sequel” to The Reluctant Dom and Domme by Default, the second in the Deep Space Mission Corps series, and a couple of scorching hot WIPs as well as the third in my Brimstone vampire series. Woot! It’s good ta be busy! No complaints here.
